In a proud and historic milestone for the university, Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) emerged as the sole academic institution to receive a Special Award during the 34th Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Anniversary Celebration held on July 2, 2025, at the M.I.C.E. Center in Diliman, Quezon City. This prestigious recognition underscores MSU-IIT’s unwavering commitment to community service and its transformative role in advancing social rehabilitation through sustained and meaningful extension engagements.
The award particularly honored the university’s ongoing extension programs with BJMP-Iligan City, located in Barangay Tipanoy—programs that have demonstrated consistent impact, compassion, and innovation. Central to this recognition are the initiatives from the College of Computer Studies (CCS), which currently implements two major ICT-focused community programs: TechBEHINDBars, designed to equip Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) with foundational digital literacy and technology skills, and TechBEYONDBars, which provides capacity building for Jail Officers and BJMP personnel. These programs illustrate CCS’s deep commitment to using technological education as a powerful tool for empowerment, rehabilitation, and institutional strengthening.
MSU-IIT’s recognition also reflects the influence of a broader, multidisciplinary collaboration, with seven impactful extension projects being implemented inside the detention facility. These initiatives are led by dedicated faculty members from the College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Education (CED), College of Computer Studies (CCS), and College of Economics, Business, and Accountancy (CEBA). Together, these projects promote holistic well-being, personal growth, economic preparedness, educational development, and digital empowerment—helping create a more hopeful and dignified environment for PDLs and personnel alike.
On behalf of University Chancellor Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, the award was formally received by Dr. Nancy Q. Echavez, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs; Dr. Rosario L. Reserva, Director of the WE CARE Office; and Dr. Angeline P. Dinoro, Extension Coordinator and Assistant Dean of the College of Education. Their presence highlighted the university’s collective dedication to bridging academic expertise with community needs, especially in sectors where support and rehabilitation are most transformative.
This recognition stands as a powerful affirmation of MSU-IIT’s mission to extend its work beyond academic boundaries and into communities where education can spark meaningful change. It embodies the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and rebuild, and that genuine rehabilitation begins when society invests in people’s potential—regardless of their circumstances.
MSU-IIT continues to champion its role as a catalyst for sustainable development and social transformation, aligned with its enduring vision of producing scholars for the people—leaders who innovate with purpose and serve with compassion.
