The 2023 MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Annual In-House Review for Extension Projects was successfully conducted on October 16, 2023, at the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM). The event featured twenty-seven extension initiatives from various colleges and departments, reflecting the institution’s growing commitment to community development, innovation, and public service. Each project was evaluated by a distinguished panel composed of Ms. Reggie D. Punongbayan, Ms. Mariefe Balanay-Quinones, Mr. Jeffrey A. Carin, Ms. Nivea Louwah D. Sermona, and Mr. Virgilio S. Nanaman, whose expertise provided valuable insights into the impact and sustainability of the presented initiatives.
This year’s Review showcased the strength and diversity of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) in advancing technology-driven community engagement, with three compelling presentations demonstrating CCS’s expanding impact.
A major highlight was the recognition of the CCS extension project my.MedMaker, led by Assoc. Prof. Lemuel Clark Velasco, which secured 2nd Place in the Cluster A Oral Presentation Category. The award-winning project, “Advancing Healthcare through Additive Manufacturing by Implementing a Virtual Surgical Planning Training Program on Advanced Mandibular Defect Reconstruction for Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons,” exemplifies interdisciplinary innovation. In collaboration with the Philippine Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Puzzlebox 3D Printer Philippines, the initiative integrates Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) and additive manufacturing to enhance surgical precision, reduce operative time, and improve patient outcomes in mandibular reconstruction procedures. This project underscores the transformative potential of merging computer science, engineering, and medical technology to strengthen healthcare capabilities in the Philippines.
Alongside this achievement, two other CCS faculty members showcased impactful extension initiatives:
Jerina Jean M. Ecleo presented “Bridging the Digital Divide: My.ICT’s Impact on Empowering Marginalized Youth through Education and Technology.” Her presentation highlighted how the my.ICT program advances digital literacy, technology skills training, and equitable access to digital resources—uplifting underserved youth and equipping them with competencies essential in the 21st century.
Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. delivered his presentation titled “Unlocking Digital Inclusion: A Comprehensive Training on Evaluating Accessibility in E-Government Websites.” His project emphasized the importance of creating accessible digital public services by training stakeholders to assess and improve the usability, compliance, and inclusivity of government websites, thereby promoting more equitable citizen engagement.
The strong representation of the College of Computer Studies at the Review demonstrates its unwavering dedication to leveraging information and emerging technologies for community development, capacity building, and social good. From enhancing healthcare through 3D technologies to empowering marginalized youth and advocating digital accessibility, CCS continues to lead in producing extension initiatives that drive meaningful and sustainable impact across sectors.
This collective achievement reaffirms CCS’s role as an innovation hub within MSU-IIT—committed to excellence, collaboration, and the transformative power of technology in advancing societal progress.
