The Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) successfully held the 2024 Annual Review on SDG Impact on December 4, 2024, highlighting exceptional research and extension initiatives that advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s event featured a distinguished array of projects that demonstrated the Institute’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community empowerment. The strong participation across colleges underscored the shared dedication to addressing pressing societal challenges through impactful, research-driven solutions.
The organizing committee extended its gratitude to the administration, evaluators, presenters, and participants whose collective efforts contributed to the success of the annual gathering. Their support continues to strengthen MSU-IIT’s role as a leader in SDG-driven programs and initiatives.
A notable highlight of the event was the First Place win of the My.ICT Extension Project of the Information Technology (IT) Program in the Impactful Extension Project Poster Presentation Category. The project, which champions digital literacy and ICT empowerment in partner communities, is led and supported by a dedicated team of faculty members: Instr. Marjorie M. Tabigue, Prof. Lomesindo T. Caparida, Assoc. Prof. Mia Amor C. Tinam-isan, Assoc. Prof. Lemuel Clark P. Velasco, Assoc. Prof. Rabby Q. Lavilles, Assoc. Prof. Erik Louwe R. Sala, Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito, Jr., Asst. Prof. Jerina Jean M. Ecleo, Asst. Prof. Jerame B. Beloy, Asst. Prof. Haron Hakeen D. Lua, and Instr. Vincent Q. Malales.
Equally outstanding were the achievements of the students from the Computer Applications Department, whose research contributions excelled in the Students Category Cluster A. Two exemplary projects emerged as top winners, reflecting the creativity, technical proficiency, and research excellence of CCS students.
The Professional Category also celebrated outstanding achievements from the College of Computer Studies (CCS). The project “Implementation of a Virtual Surgical Planning and Additive Manufacturing Training Program on Advanced Pre-operative Surgical Planning for Repair and Reconstruction for Otolaryngologists and Orthopedic Surgeons” secured Third Place in the Oral Presentation category. This extension initiative, part of the my.MedMaker extension project, is led by Assoc. Prof. Lemuel Clark Velasco, Asst. Prof. Paul Bokingkito Jr., and Prof. Gideon Emmanuel Chiu, and underscores the growing role of digital fabrication and virtual planning in medical education and surgical innovation.
Another significant win for CCS came from the Department of Information Technology, which earned Third Place for their study “Mobile Application for Detecting Abaca Bunchy Top Virus Using Machine Learning.” Authored by Mohammad Haroun Mamalo, Hanan Ramos, Kerby Joy Tungal, and Prof. Paul Jr. Bokingkito, the study highlights the transformative potential of machine learning in enhancing agricultural disease detection and supporting sustainable livelihoods for abaca farmers.
Equally remarkable were the achievements of the Computer Applications Department under the Students Category Cluster A. Two research projects emerged as top winners, reflecting the creativity and technical expertise of CCS students.
First Place was awarded to Errol Jade J. Carcedo, Crischan G. Larita, and Kirk Zyke Dream A. Gentiles for their project: “SMART SWINE FEEDING: An IoT-Enabled Feed Mixer and Dispenser for Piggeries Using ESP32.” Guided by Asst. Prof. Apple Rose B. Alce and co-adviser Asst. Prof. Paul Rodolf P. Castor, the project supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Their innovation contributes to agricultural efficiency and sustainable livestock management.
Second Place went to Edrian A. Abilay, Keann F. Jumalon, and Janin C. Bihag for their project: “Smart Campus Navigation for MSU-IIT: Development of an Embedded GUI for Assistive Digital Mapping.” Also supervised by Asst. Prof. Alce and Asst. Prof. Castor, this research aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The project enhances campus accessibility through digital mapping and assistive navigation.
Both student teams demonstrated how innovative ideas, guided research, and technical mastery can address real-world problems while supporting the global SDG agenda.
MSU-IIT celebrates and extends its warmest congratulations to all winners, presenters, and contributors of the 2024 Annual Review on SDG Impact. Their achievements continue to elevate the Institute’s commitment to producing research and extension work that transforms communities and advances sustainable development.
