As digitalization continues to expand across institutions and communities, the importance of cybersecurity education has grown significantly. Responding to this need, the College of Computer Studies (CCS) implemented a cybersecurity awareness initiative as part of its extension efforts to support marginalized youth in Iligan City on October 25, 2025, at the CCS, Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).
The activity was implemented through the CCS extension project my.CyberSafe: Bridging Cyber Security and Education, in collaboration with the my.ICT Extension Project, reaffirming the college’s commitment to community engagement and digital inclusion. The program aimed to equip marginalized youth with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and confidently.
The awareness session featured two resource speakers who offered participants a well-rounded understanding of cybersecurity, covering both practical online safety measures and broader legal and ethical considerations in the digital space. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, the speakers highlighted common cyber threats and emphasized the importance of vigilance in online activities.
The program formally opened with a talk by Asst. Prof. Haron Hakeem D. Lua, who delivered an engaging session titled “Staying Safe Online: Protecting Your Digital Footprints.” His presentation focused on responsible online behavior, data privacy, and strategies to minimize digital risks, particularly on social media and other commonly used online platforms. The session encouraged participants to become more mindful of their digital presence and the long-term impact of their online actions.
Overall, the activity strengthened cybersecurity awareness among the participants and underscored the role of academic institutions in empowering communities through technology education. Through initiatives such as my.CyberSafe, CCS continues to bridge the gap between cybersecurity knowledge and public awareness, contributing to a safer and more informed digital society.
