The College of Computer Studies (CCS) of Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), through its TechBehindBars: Digital Reformation for Inmates initiative and in collaboration with the my.CyberSafe Extension Project, successfully conducted a CyberSafe Awareness Training for Women Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the BJMP Facility in Tipanoy, Iligan City on August 7, 2025. The session focused on empowering PDLs with essential knowledge on responsible digital engagement, online safety, and legal awareness—skills vital in today’s increasingly digital society.
The training featured three substantial learning sessions led by CCS faculty.
Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. opened the program with a deeply engaging discussion on digital footprints, highlighting how every interaction—photos posted, comments made, websites visited, and accounts created—forms part of one’s permanent digital identity. He explained how digital traces can impact future opportunities, relationships, and safety. He emphasized the importance of mindful online behavior, responsible sharing, and maintaining a positive digital reputation, empowering participants to understand and protect their identities in the online world.
Following this, Asst. Prof. Jerame B. Beloy delivered an insightful session on cybersecurity awareness. She introduced common cyber threats such as phishing, identity theft, social engineering, online scams, and weak password practices. Using real-life examples, she demonstrated the potential consequences of unsafe online behavior and equipped participants with practical strategies to protect personal information—such as creating strong passwords, recognizing suspicious messages, securing accounts, and practicing safe browsing. Her talk underscored that cybersecurity is not just a technical skill but a daily habit crucial for personal safety.
Concluding the lecture series, Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad provided a clear and relatable overview of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA 10175). He discussed the legal implications of cyber offenses, the rights of individuals in cyberspace, and the responsibilities that come with using digital platforms. Atty. Palad emphasized how understanding the law empowers individuals to navigate online spaces safely and responsibly. His session clarified misconceptions and highlighted how laws protect individuals from online harm.
One of the participants shared, “Karon nakasabot na kami unsaon pagpanalipod sa among kaugalingon online ug nganong importante ang pagiging responsabli sa paggamit sa internet. Naghatag kini ug paglaum para sa mas luwas ug mas maayong kaugmaon inig balik namo sa komunidad."
The program is spearheaded by the TechBehindBars core team composed of CCS faculty members Alquine Roy F. Taculin, Paul B. Bokingkito Jr., Jerina Jean M. Ecleo, Jennifer Joyce M. Montemayor, Leah A. Alindayo, Liezil C. Daberao, Maria Fe P. Bahinting, and Nenen S. Borinaga, together with training assistants Michael Harvey M. Pagente and Anna Mangubat of the WE CARE Office.
In collaboration, the my.CyberSafe Extension Project, led by Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. and conceptualized by Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad, played a pivotal role in delivering the CyberSafe modules. The initiative continues to receive strong support from Dr. Rabby Q. Lavilles, Dean of CCS, alongside faculty members Assoc. Prof. Mia Amor C. Tinam-Isan, Asst. Prof. Jerina Jean Ecleo, Asst. Prof. Jerame Beloy, Asst. Prof. Ma. Camilla Ann R. Llamas, Asst. Prof. Haron Hakeem Lua, and Asst. Prof. Nenen Borinaga.
This successful activity reflects CCS’s unwavering commitment to inclusive education, digital empowerment, and community rehabilitation. Through TechBehindBars and my.CyberSafe, MSU-IIT continues to champion transformative programs that equip marginalized individuals with the knowledge they need to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly, fostering hope and readiness for reintegration into society.
