The College of Computer Studies (CCS) of Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), through its TechBehindBars: Digital Reformation for Inmates program, successfully conducted a transformative Digital Skills Enhancement Workshop for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the BJMP Facility in Tipanoy, Iligan City on November 7, 2024.
Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. led an immersive lecture and hands-on session on Microsoft Excel, enabling participants to navigate spreadsheets, employ basic formulas, and explore practical digital tools that enhance everyday productivity. These foundational skills are essential in preparing PDLs for livelihood opportunities and smoother reintegration into society.
The workshop meaningfully contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)—by championing equitable access to digital learning and strengthening rehabilitative initiatives within correctional institutions.
This heartfelt reflection captures how the program nurtures hope, confidence, and renewed purpose among PDLs even within highly restricted environments.
The TechBehindBars initiative continues to demonstrate how technology-driven education can empower individuals and support meaningful rehabilitation. With ongoing plans to broaden its reach and deepen its impact, the program reinforces the belief that digital knowledge is a powerful catalyst for personal transformation and successful reintegration.
The program is spearheaded by the TechBehindBars core team of CCS—Alquine Roy F. Taculin, Paul B. Bokingkito Jr., Jerina Jean M. Ecleo, Jennifer Joyce M. Montemayor, Leah A. Alindayo, Liezil C. Daberao, Maria Fe P. Bahinting, and Nenen S. Borinaga—with training support from Michael Harvey M. Pagente and Kent Lawrence Pabes of the WE CARE Office of MSU-IIT.
